Bottled Resistance: Crafting Spells for Revolutionary Magic
Across cultures—from the Americas to Europe, Africa, India, and beyond—magical and folk traditions have long used containers to hold, direct, and amplify intention. Rooted in magical lineage, Hilma’s Ghost will present a workshop in which the spell jar is a vessel for focusing symbolic materials into acts of protection, healing, and transformation.
Throughout history, witches were vilified for their supposed powers, though scholarship shows their practices were more often devoted to healing than harm. So threatening was the figure of the witch that 17th-century England devised “witch bottles” as protective charms, filled with everyday yet potent items—urine, hair, nail clippings, red thread, rosemary, pins, or wine—believed to counteract spells. In contemporary times, the spell jar has evolved to be a tool for positive change.
For CIRCUS OF LIFE, Bottled Resistance invites participants to learn about the history of magic while crafting their own spell jars for this urgent moment, when collective ritual can open new pathways for resistance and repair. Each participant will receive jars and a curated array of potent materials—plants, teeth, sigils, keys, and more—to create their own personalized spell jars. Further, the participants will learn how to activate their jars through invocation, ritual, and incantation, and can take home their jars at the end of the session.
No prior experience is required. All materials will be provided. Registration is $25 and recommended for ages 13 and up. Register here.
